Why apply online? |
1. It's free! You never have to pay to apply for federal student aid. 2. It's fast! You'll get your results much faster than if you mail in the paper FAFSA. Your school can tell you sooner if you qualify for aid. 3. It's easy! It's easy to navigate. Online instructions are available to help you answer every question, and FAFSA on the WEB lets you skip questions that don't apply to you. 4. It's secure! Your personal information is completely secure. It's just as safe as mailing a paper application. |
Before Beginning a FAFSA: |
1. If you don't already have a PIN (Personal Identification Number), apply for one now at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN is your electronic signature! Your parents should also apply for their PIN so they can sign the FAFSA since you are a "dependent" student. 2. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to find a list of documents you will need to fill out the FAFSA. Get the Pre-Application Worksheet and fill it out before you start your FAFSA application online in January. |
Filling Out a FAFSA: |
1. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov January 1, 2006 or later. Select "Filling Out a FAFSA" and follow the on-screen instructions. You can use your PIN to sign electronically before you start. Apply early! Once the money is gone, it's gone! 2. If you need help: Click "Live Help" link to send and receive real-time answers to questions via email or call 1-800-4-FED-AID or 1-800-433-3243 to speak to a customer service representative. 3. Completing the application: a. Sign with your PIN or mail back a paper signature page. b. Review and check your answers carefully. c. Submit by using the "Submit My FAFSA Now" button. d. Print the confirmation page for your records. |
FAFSA Follow-Up: |
1. If you gave your email, you'll receive an email with a link to your online Student Aid Report (SAR) within 5 days. Otherwise, you'll receive a paper SAR in the mail in about 2 weeks. If you don't hear anything from FAFSA within 2 weeks, return to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select "Check the Status of a Submitted FAFSA." 2. Check your SAR for accuracy. If you applied early and estimated your income and taxes, go back and compare your SAR answers with your W2 forms and IRS tax returns. Correct any answers that are wrong. 3. You can check, correct and print your processed information at any time on the FAFSA Web site, using your PIN. |
